ESG and Energy Management Software – A Natural Synergy

ESG and Energy Management Software – A Natural Synergy

There are natural synergies between Environmental Social Governance (ESG) and the use of Energy Management (EM) software.

The common route is (obviously) energy and or utility waste data which is used to feed the energy management software and the ESG reports.

The use of software and its algorithms will ease the burden of ESG reporting by automating the reporting operation and disclosure of benchmarking while also performing energy analytics and optimisations to improve building KPIs.

A very simplified time-bound history on why ESG and EM have become increasingly dominant in the real estate and manufacturing sectors is described in the bullet points below:

  • 2010-2015 – High and volatile energy prices, limited carbon reporting, energy managed in silos and upcoming compliance requirements
  • 2016-2021 – Low energy prices, voluntary carbon reporting and combined asset/space management
  • 2022-2027 – return to volatile prices, mandatory carbon reporting and energy within the wider asset management.

The most advanced and complete energy management systems currently available, like Watts-ON, are able to provide six key functions:

1) Energy Procurement and Management
2) Utility bill Management
3) Metering, Monitoring and Targeting
4) Control Optimisation
5) Carbon Accounting
6) Project Management

These functions are needed to meet business managers key priorities – the optimisation of building operation, decarbonisation of the building portfolio, improving the environmental performance of the building portfolio, increasing resilience and attracting investments.

There are a large number of large companies currently offering software products with the ability to provide a seamless software solution to manage ESG and provide EM services and claim to be market leaders.

However many of the companies behind these products are also offering BMS software and or equipment as their core business.

This poses a fundamental question.

How independent would they be in analysing the performance of their own products?

In this situation, smaller independent, specialist players like Watts-ON consultants, being technology advanced, can provide unbiased advice on the analysis of building HVAC and their control.

Market research shows that 55% of building owners do not yet have a plan to invest in EM software, with another 35% not being aware of the use of this technology.

57% of building owners who are aware of and active in the use of EM software are planning to expand the deployment of the existing software solution across the portfolio.  14% are planning to replace the current solution with a new provider and 29% are planning to purchase a solution for the first time in the next two years.

The characteristics which identify the ideal provider of EM software solutions are:

Innovation
Leadership
Expertise
Analytical Skills

At Watts-ON we are proud to say that our software solutions have been developed on these four pillars.

Whether you are thinking about investing in digital solutions for ESG or EM for the first time or you are looking for a better and more dedicated and cost-effective partner, look no further than Watts-ON.

Some of our current clients, often comment about the quality and superiority of our software
