CIBSE AM17:2022

CIBSE has released AM17:2022, Heat Pump installations for large non-domestic buildings. In the guidance is highlighted that in order to specify “a smaller, more efficient and more affordable heat pump system”, consideration and planning shall be put to define the building load. Assessing peak loads, diversification and demand profile, calculating the capacity of the heating and cooling emitters at new design temperatures and account for future resilience are key aspects involved in the specification of HP technology that is used in retrofit projects. Failing in analysing energy consumption data of a building where HPs are planned to be used, could result in larger, more expensive and noisier units. Watts-ON Consultants has completed HP retrofit projects in the commercial sector and it is currently supporting NHS trusts with HP district heating network feasibility studies. The challenges associated to these projects are lack of funding or impossibility to implement efficiency measured to reduce the building heating load (which is what AM17:2022 strongly recommends to do first), lack of plant space and availability of power supply. This is because eliminating gas consumption is seen as the priority rather then reducing its use to then swap to an electrically powered heating systems. To optimize the size of your future heating and cooling technologies, Watts-ON consultants strongly recommends to start early with your decarbonization journey measuring your current building loads and HVAC operations. This early stage analysis will guarantee a more successful and reliable heat pump installation in what could be a near future requirement. To do this preparation work we recommend the use of Watts-ON, our Fault Detection and Diagnostic tool. WattsON will unlock and digest the key operational information about your HVAC system to get your building ready to be retrofitted with HP technologies. Adding 3% or less to your future HP project, Watts-ON could allow you to save up to 20% in the HP capital project and improve the chances to have a functional and efficient HP heating or cooling system. While using Watts-ON you will also reduce your building energy consumption straight away, which is a big plus given the current energy costs…
